It Doesn’t Always Have to Be a Crate!
Before coming home to you, your puppy was part of a little “puppy pack” — sleeping, playing, and cuddling with littermates all day long. They had toys, bully sticks, and constant companionship. Many even developed close bonds with specific siblings, and it can take a day or two to adjust when that best friend leaves for their new home.
So when your puppy finally joins your family, it’s an exciting time — but also a big transition for them. It will be their very first night without littermates, without the warmth of the puppy room, and in a completely new environment. Everything smells, sounds, and feels different. It may even be a little colder than what they were used to at RMBT.
Create a Safe, Comfortable Puppy Space
If possible, set up a dedicated area in your home just for your puppy during the first few weeks. Choose a space that’s close to where life happens — the living room, kitchen, or hallway are great options. Avoid isolating your puppy in a spare room or out-of-the-way corner. Being part of the daily rhythm of the home helps your puppy feel safe and included.
We recommend removing rugs, laundry, or anything absorbent from the floor. Puppies are naturally drawn to soft surfaces for potty breaks, and it’s best to keep the space simple and easy to clean. Hardwood, tile, or laminate flooring is ideal.
Instead of a crate, consider using a puppy playpen or exercise fence to create a cozy space. These allow your puppy room to stretch, nap, play, and observe life around them while staying safe and contained.
What Goes Inside the Playpen?
- A soft bed or crate for naps
- Food and water bowls (preferably stainless steel)
- A washable potty pad in one corner
- A few chew-safe toys and soft plushies
- A blanket with familiar smells (see below)
Comfort from Home
Each puppy goes home with a blanket from us that smells like their littermates — something soft and familiar to help them adjust to their new environment. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference in those first few nights away from their puppy pack.
Creating a comforting, structured environment goes a long way in helping your new puppy feel safe and confident. With a cozy playpen and a little extra love, your puppy will settle in beautifully.
