Are Emotional Support Animal Registry sites legit?

An Emotional Support Animal Registry does not certify an Emotional Support Animal. ESAs are not the same as service animals, which are trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. ESAs do not have the same legal protections as service animals under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Under federal law, an ESA is considered a reasonable accommodation for a person with a disability, and landlords and housing providers are required to allow an ESA in a person’s home, even if there are policies or rules against pets. However, ESAs are not allowed in public places that do not allow pets.

There are many online Emotional Support Animal Registry sites that claim to “certify” or “register” emotional support animals.

However, these sites are not recognized by the law and do not confer any legal benefits. The only way to qualify your animal companion as a legitimate ESA is to have an ESA letter from a licensed mental health professional, such as a doctor or therapist. An ESA letter should state that the person has a mental or emotional disability and that the animal provides therapeutic support and comfort to the person.

To qualify for an ESA Biewer, a person must have a mental or emotional disability

To qualify for an ESA Biewer, a person must have a mental or emotional disability that is recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Some common examples of mental and emotional disabilities that may qualify a person for an ESA include:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Personality disorders
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

To obtain an ESA letter for your Biewer Terrier, a person with a mental or emotional disability must be evaluated by a licensed mental health professional, such as a doctor or therapist. The mental health professional will assess the person’s symptoms and determine if an ESA would be beneficial in providing therapeutic support and comfort.

Please don’t waste any money to register your Biewer Terrier with an Emotional Support Animal Registry.

These online registration sites charge a fee to “register” or “certify” an emotional support animal and will send you a certificate or a vest for your Biewer but will not provide you with a legit ESA letter.

Some individuals have attempted to misuse the designation of an ESA in order to bring their pets into places where animals are typically not allowed, such as on airplanes or in rental properties. This can include falsely claiming that their pet is an ESA, buying fake ESA certifications or vests online, or providing false information about a disability to a housing provider or airline. Misuse of the ESA designation can be problematic for a number of reasons

Firstly, it can undermine the credibility of legitimate ESA owners and make it more difficult for them to access the support they need. Secondly, it can create safety hazards for both humans and animals, as pets that are not trained or suited for certain environments may behave unpredictably or aggressively.

In order to combat this problem, organizations and authorities have established some guidelines to help identify and regulate ESAs. Some airlines, for example, now require passengers to provide documentation from a mental health professional confirming the need for an ESA, while housing providers may ask for specific information about the disability and how the animal will help alleviate symptoms. Additionally, some states also passed laws that make it illegal to fake service, therapy or emotional support animals and this would subject to penalties. Emotional Support Animal Registry
